In times of challenge and immense change, we often are reminded about our need for love. It’s easy to say that, “What the world needs now is love,” and in times of severe distress to sing, “Love’s in need of Love today.” But we must at the same time ask the question, what does it mean to Love? What does it mean for a people to express themselves in a loving way? The word is so broad with so many definitions and so many perspectives. In a completely unscientific survey on Facebook responses to the prompt, “Describe Love in one word,” included empathy, compassion, respect, giving, tolerance, acceptance, agape, and many many more. Can we move towards a common goal if the common goal is undefined? We must venture to clearly define what love is. While a daunting (some say impossible) task, we can begin where we all can agree. That is that we want to have a world that is more loving than what we currently see. Maybe each one of us can do something that we consider to be loving. Maybe that shows up in using thoughtful words with one another, or being generous, or acknowledging the work of someone else. What does a more loving world look like to you? Would you #makeyourworld?
